There is a lot to think about when it comes to choosing food for your dog. When you start shopping, you will be assailed by a wide variety of brands and flavours of food to choose from, and you will often have to think long and hard about what is best for your pet. However, the first decision you will need to make is whether to opt for wet or dry food.
Those looking for a simple answer to this question will be disappointed. Unfortunately, it all comes down to personal preference. However, this does not mean the decision needs to be all that difficult. There are a number of pros and cons to choosing each kind of food, so just narrow down the one that fits best with your needs, and your dog’s.
Dry food
This is by far the most convenient of the two options. Dry food takes a long time to spoil, meaning you can buy it in bulk and keep it wherever you have space. You will rarely have to worry about using up the rest of the pack once it is open. Being able to buy in bulk like this is also usually more cost-effective.
This also means you can let your dog eat at its own pace. If you have to go away for a weekend, you can leave an extra-large portion out for your pet so they can snack on it whenever they are hungry. Wet food in this scenario will spoil, and will be bad for your dog.
However, there are downsides to this type of food. For one, dry food is usually not as good for your dog nutritionally. This is not always the case, especially if you opt for premium, high-quality food. However, a lot of dry kibble uses carbohydrates, especially grains, to bulk out the majority of the food.
Dogs are not designed to digest grains or an excess of carbohydrates, and it can cause energy spikes and crashes if they digest too much. A high-protein diet is a much better option for a dog.
Wet food
Obviously, this kind of dog food has none of the advantages of dry kibble listed above. It spoils easily, and therefore cannot easily be left out for your dogs to eat at their own pace. This means you will have to pay more attention to their meals, and put more effort into feeding them the right amount.
However, there are a number of advantages, mostly keyed into canine nutrition. Wet food is much less boxlikely to be bulked out with carbohydrates, which means your pet will have relatively stable energy levels throughout the day and be healthier in general.
Wet food is also better for hydrating your dog. Your pets will often become thirsty throughout the day, and giving them enough water at the right time can be difficult, especially if you are out at work. The fluids in the food will keep your pet from becoming dehydrated while you are out.
Finally, for many dogs wet food simply tastes nicer. It tends to have a much stronger flavour than dry food, so dogs find it preferable. This is especially true for older dogs that might not have the ability to smell or taste as well as younger canines.
